The honour of your presence: The word honour, spelt in the British manner with a U, signifies a religious ritual held in a place of worship. The pleasure of your company: This phrase suggests that the event is taking place outside of a religious establishment. For example, if both sets of the couple’s parents are hosting the wedding, this phrase might read “at the marriage of their children.”
Bride and Groom Lines
A ceremony at a house of worship is denoted by the word honour, which is spelt in the British form with the letter U. Because the event is taking place outside of a house of worship, it is called “the joy of your presence.” For example, if both sets of the couple’s parents are hosting, this sentence might read “at the wedding of their children.”
Date and Time Lines
For formal functions, everything is meticulously planned and written down (no numerals). The year is entirely optional (the assumption being your wedding is on the nearest such date). The time of day is indicated by the use of the words “o’clock” or “half after o’clock.” It is not necessary to use the a.m. or p.m. while writing a letter. For a more informal wedding, numbers are OK.
Unless missing the street address will cause misunderstanding, or unless your wedding is taking place at the host’s residence, the street address is typically not required. The name of the city and the state are written in full.
This information is usually included on a separate card with more official invites. Otherwise, it can be stated on the invitation if there is enough space; if the ceremony and reception will both be held at the same site, you can print “and immediately after at the reception” or “reception immediately following the ceremony.” When the reception is located at a different place, the location is recorded on a different line. If the ceremony is not immediately followed by a reception, include the time.
The majority of couples opt to add a separate response card for guests to fill out and return through postal mail after the ceremony.
According to tradition, a call for a response appears in the lower left-hand corner of the invitation, along with an address, signaling that visitors should respond on their own personal stationery.

Wedding Invitation Wording – Etiquette and Advice
One of the most often asked questions we receive as wedding planners is over the phrasing of invitations. What exactly is proper etiquette? Who will be the first to say their name? How do we address the fact that both of our parents are hosting the wedding? Is there any information that should be included in the invitation? What specific facts should we leave out? When it comes to hosting a Welcome Reception, how do we manage inviting only particular people? The list continues on and on. We’ve produced this blog article in order to provide some answers to some of those questions.
- When we say “hosting,” we are referring to the person who will be paying for the wedding.
- Frequently, the rehearsal dinner would be hosted by the groom’s family.
- Most of the time, it’s a 50/50 split or even a 60/40 split across families.
- However, regardless of who is paying for your wedding, it is still crucial to understand basic etiquette while sending out wedding invites.
First things first, whose name goes first:
Traditionally, the bride is always the one who arrives first, followed by the husband. We usually recommend that the bride’s first and middle names be used in a formal invitation to avoid confusion with the groom. The groom’s full name and official title are used to refer to him (optional).
Next, what is written on the invite?
- The host (or the person who is hosting)
- The invitation (requesting your attendance, inviting you to participate, etc.)
- Date and hour of the wedding
- The location(s) and address(es)
- Following that, there will be a reception (or, if there is a break, you might add “Reception will commence at time”)
- Optional: a dress code is required.
That’s all there is to it. Do not include any information about your RSVP on the invitation. Please do not include your registration information on the invitation. Separate insert cards should be created for each of them. These will be discussed more below.
What’s the best way to write out the time:
- It is always necessary to provide the time
- It is never appropriate to uppercase the word time. It is customary to use “o’clock” after the hour if the time is on the hour. If the time is not on the hour, do not use the word “o’clock.” (For example, 6:00 p.m. in the evening)
- Time should be hyphenated if it is not on the hour (as seen above)
- Whenever time is mentioned, it should always be followed by “in the morning,” “in the afternoon,” “in the evening,” or “at midnight.”

After discussing this with a number of brides-to-be, I decided to pose this question and share what we’ve learned from designing hundreds of stickers for favors and welcome bags over the years. During Sweet Sanity, we frequently see Welcome Bags with the Bride’s name on them first, followed by goodies at the wedding where she is the second guest! What do you think about same-sex weddings? Also, in the case of same-sex marriages, we frequently see one of the following two options:
- Allowing Alphabetical order to guide the path provides a great framework to follow and helps define the order such that JeffJohn is used instead of JeffJohn
- Personal Preference is a similar option to the one mentioned before. For example, if you’ve been known as “Tina and Cathy” among your friends and family, it could seem strange to have your names printed in reverse for the occasion. Even if it seems strange to say it in that order for you and your spouse (and even if it doesn’t feel like you all! ), it may be wise to respect your relationship and refer to yourselves as you typically would.

Couples should be invited together on the same line if they are a married pair. You are allowed to exclude titles and just list the names in alphabetical order (as shown below in example one). If they all have different last names, start with the person you’re closest to and work your way down. If you’re all on the same page with them, go through them in alphabetical order. If one individual has assumed the other’s name, you might address the invitation in such a way that it reflects the situation (shown below in example two).
Celine Elgin and Ms.
Elgin and Jacqueline Purcell are married.
Ms. Elgin and Ms. Purcell, or Celine and Jacqueline, are written on the inside envelope. Exemple No. 2: Mr. John Rivera and Mrs. Samantha Rivera are listed on the outside of the envelope. The Riveras, Mr. and Mrs. John Mr. and Mrs. Rivera, or John and Samantha, are written on the inner envelope.
How to Address Invitations to An Unmarried Couple Living Together
It’s the same as it is for married couples when it comes to how to mail invitations to an unmarried couple who lives together in a shared residence. Both names should be printed on the envelopes, however in this case, each name is given its own line on the envelope. Mr. Aaron Triguiero’s name is printed on the outside of the envelope. Mr. Gabriel Reyes is a lawyer. Mr. Triguiero’s name is written on the inner envelope. Respectfully, Mr. Reyes
How to Address Wedding Invitations to A Married Doctor or Two Married Doctors
It is standard etiquette to address a doctor by their professional title while speaking with them. If the couple does not have a common last name, make certain that your wedding invitations reflect that fact on the envelopes. Dr. Anne Barker and Mr. Peter Underwood are listed on the outside of the envelope. If the doctor refers to their spouse by their first and last names in social situations: Dr. Anne Underwood and Mr. Peter Underwood are married. If both parties are doctors, the outer envelope should be addressed as follows: Doctors Anne and Peter Underwood are a married couple.

How to Address Wedding Invitations to Those With Other Distinguished Titles
Military troops, judges, reverends, and other religious leaders should follow the same standards as doctors. If both titles are too long to fit on a single line, indent the second line to make it fit. The following is printed on the outside of the envelope: The Honorable Jane Kelly and Lieutenant Jonathan Kelly, both of the United States Navy If they’re both captains in the military, the following is possible: Captains Jane and Jonathan Kelly of the United States Navy The following names appear on the inner envelope: Judge Kelly and Lieutenant Kelly, United States NavyOr The Captains Kelly
How to Address Wedding Invitations to Children and Families
Include the names of younger guests on the inside envelope of their parents’ invitation, as well as on the outside envelope (s). If you’re talking to a female under the age of 18, you can call her “Miss.” Until they are 18 years old, boys do not require a title; after that, they can be addressed as “Mr.” You can always choose to forego titles or adopt the gender-neutral title of “Mx,” just like the other guests who have been invited. Please keep in mind that by not including the names of each kid, you are indicating that youngsters are not invited.
You should urge your immediate relatives and wedding party to help spread the word that your wedding will be an adults-only event, and you should include this information on your wedding website if you are afraid that this may happen with your guests.

How to Address Wedding Invitations to Children 18 and Older
(Unless they are still living at home with their parents.) Children 18 and older should be invited to the party on their own behalf. You are not required to utilize titles, but you may do so if you choose. Just make sure you’re using the proper IDs for each of your visitors before you begin. If you’re not sure what they want as a title, it’s preferable to avoid using titles altogether or to use “Mx” as a placeholder. On the outside of the envelope, write:Ms. Audrey AbrahamOrMr. Jack AbrahamOrMx.
