17 steps for a frugal (not cheap) wedding on a budget

A recent study conducted by The Knot Real Weddings found that the typical wedding and reception cost $28,000 in 2019 (the most recent year prior to COVID for which data is available). When you consider that the median American household income (according to the Census Bureau) is around $69,000, the average wedding consumes over half a year’s worth of earnings. Thousands of individuals want to get married in a beautiful and wonderful ceremony, but only a small number are excited about the financial consequences.

When combined, the tactics outlined below may save a typical wedding hundreds of thousands of dollars on their budget.

It came down to $3,950 if you had a guest list of 50 people, thanks to some shaved corners.

Your ultimate total will be less than $4k if you follow all of our recommendations.

Choose a location near your guests

Your wedding site should be close to the majority of your guests in order to maximize convenience. While this will not immediately save you money, it will increase the likelihood that the next tip will be successful. Strategy: Select a place that is extremely convenient for the majority of your attendees. Savings:$0 directly, although it facilitates the implementation of some of the solutions listed below.

Ask for wedding help instead of wedding gifts

As a last resort, talk to some of the friends and family members you’ve invited to the wedding and ask them if they’d be prepared to volunteer assistance during the reception in place of a present. This is especially true if you have a person on your guest list who possesses a specific talent. Guests at your wedding may be able to assist with photography, give emcee services, serve the bar during the reception, or execute any of the countless other chores that accompany a wedding. While some visitors may prefer not to participate in this activity, others may welcome the opportunity.

From our perspective, it would be far more significant if the people we care about were really there at the ceremony, and many of them leaped at the chance to be a part of it in some manner.

Getting even a small amount of assistance may easily save you up to 5 percent on the entire cost of your wedding.

Savings:$1,400 With all of the money you’ve saved for your wedding, you may put it towards your next significant step in life: college. Purchase a property that you and your partner will adore as much as each other. Mortgages are compared in the table below.

Hold the ceremony at home or outdoors

According to The Knot, the typical wedding location costs $10,500, which accounts for around one-third of the overall cost of the big day’s festivities. While reducing the number of guests on your guest list can undoubtedly help you save money, another strategy is to go outside the box when it comes to your location. You might want to consider having the wedding at someone’s house, especially if they have a beautiful yard or a lot of space to accommodate everyone. If your guest list is short, this is a lot more reasonable option to consider.

Savings:$10,500 Another option is to inquire about the possibility of holding the wedding at a public park and utilizing any facilities that the parks and recreation department may have available for a reception.

The results of my inquiry into available venues with a price range of $1,000 to $4,000 revealed that such locations were accessible, however there would be some additional expenses to assist with the setup of various services.

Make use of a park for your wedding and reception as a strategy.

Do the catering yourself or hire a family-owned restaurant

While reducing the number of guests can save you money on food, you may save even more money by selecting a low-cost catering alternative. According to The Knot Real Weddings Study, the average cost per catered plate is $51, which means that if you have 50 guests, your dinner expenditures would total $2,550, even if you have a smaller guest list. We had relatives and friends cater our wedding, in place of (and in addition to) a wedding present. They cooked and served the dinner. If you have someone who is interested in taking on that responsibility, this may be an option for you.

Savings:$2,550 If this is not an option, consider having a local family-owned restaurant cater your event.

In the event that a small family-owned restaurant can cater and save 25 percent on each dish, it is still a substantial discount.

Buy a small cake or cupcakes from a grocery store

According to Brides Magazine, the average cost of a wedding cake is around $350. This is an area where the costs may simply be reduced by using something that is a little more straightforward. As an alternative to going straight to a wedding cake professional, check out what possibilities are available for a smaller, more straightforward cake from a grocery shop instead. A huge selection of cake alternatives were available at my local grocery store chain, Hy-Vee, ranging from highly elegant tiered wedding cakes that were almost as expensive as the $350 price tag to far basic ones that could feed 50 people for less than $100.

Savings:$250 Another alternative is to simply purchase cupcakes.

When you combine this with a $30 cake stand, you can serve 70 cupcakes in a gorgeous presentation for less than $100 dollars. Purchase cupcakes and arrange them yourself as a strategy. Savings:$250

Go minimal with the flowers

According to Wedding Wire, the average cost of flowers at a wedding is $1,500 per person. That is a substantial sum of money! Keep the flowers as basic as possible! Stick to a modest bouquet and simple arrangements for your wedding, and you may reuse them as part of your celebration. The average cost of a bouquet is $160, but you may substantially reduce your floral expenses in other ways, such as by using fewer arrangements, depending on seasonal flowers, and include a lot of foliage in your arrangements.

If you can only get into that range with these suggestions, you’ll be doing well.

Make your own invitations

Wedding invitations are an average of $590 in price, according to The Knot once again. This cost, on the other hand, may be readily reduced by purchasing a DIY wedding invitation kit and printing the invitations yourself. My wife and I did this for our own wedding since we couldn’t bear the thought of spending hundreds of dollars on more traditional wedding invites. The guest list was created with a lovely DIY kit that we purchased for roughly $70 and printed it ourselves. If you have access to a high-quality printer and are familiar with basic layout, you may easily produce a very elegant wedding invitation on your own for less than $100, plus an additional $50 for any additional inserts and another $50 for shipping.

Consider skipping attendants and have them involved in other ways

Think about cutting the number of attendants for the bride and groom down to a single attendant for each or none at all, rather than having numerous. This not only minimizes the complexities of the celebration, such as difficult decisions about who to invite, but it may also eliminate little incidental expenses, such as bridesmaid bouquets, from the equation. Including those close to you in various ways, such as by asking them to recite a passage during your ceremony, is another option. Strategy: Keep your wedding reception to a bare minimum.

If you do have attendants, go minimal with attendant gifts and make them personal

Gifts, including as party favors, account for almost $400 of the typical wedding expenditure, according to The Knot. The majority of the $400, on the other hand, will be used to purchase gifts for the attendees. Maintaining a small wedding party allows you to save money on most aspects of the event. Additionally, because of the lower number of guests, you may be more attentive and selective when choosing a gift. Strategy: Keep attendant gifts to a minimum and personalize them. Savings:$200

Borrow stereo equipment or use yours from home

If you’re planning a modest celebration in any case, hiring a DJ can be a waste of money. As reported by Wedding Wire, the average DJ cost is $1,000, so setting up your own speakers connected to a computer for a little dance may allow you to avoid this expense. When it comes to music, you are legally permitted to utilize a music streaming service such as Spotify (but such events may violate the terms of service of such services depending on specifics).

In order to provide emcee services, enlist the assistance of your most extroverted buddy. Strategy: Take care of the DJing yourself. Savings:$1,000

Stock the bar yourself

According to The Knot, the cost of a wedding bartender is approximately $35 per hour, but this does not include the cost of the booze, which may total up to $2,300 in total. You may save a lot of money by just hiring a bartender and supplying the booze yourself, assuming that the venue is okay with this arrangement (check with them). By procuring your own booze, you may save as much as 50% on your expenses. Strategy: Purchase your own alcoholic beverages and employ a different bartender (or ask a friend) Savings:$1,150

Contact the local university

If you’re searching for live music for the ceremony or a professional photographer, one route to take is to reach out to the local college or institution. As a result, there may be music students or aspiring photographers who would welcome the opportunity to get their feet wet in the industry and who will offer a very affordable rate because they do not yet have a substantial body of work to draw on. Because newcomers to a profession are often eager to prove themselves, they will not only charge a reasonable price, but they will also go the additional mile to perform effectively and establish a good name for themselves.

When you hire a new employee, there is always the possibility of mistakes being made, but they will also be extremely focused on the work at hand because this is an exciting opportunity for them.

Split the cost of decorations – and consider buying used

Wedding decorations that are not made of flowers might cost up to $600. This might be an excellent opportunity to keep things as simple as possible by using repurposed décor. In the event that you know someone who is getting married, you may be able to share in the cost of the decorations so that you both get to utilize them, so decreasing the cost in half. If you know of any recent weddings, you may also get in touch with the couples and inquire about their wedding decorations. Plan B: Split the expense of decorations or get them second-hand.

If you’re getting married in a church, ask the auxiliary for help

Whether you’re being married in a church or the hall of a civic group, find out if the auxiliary club linked with that location has any thoughts or ideas for your reception. While they may not be able to deliver significant savings immediately, they may be able to supply ideas and minor services that can help you save a little money, and they may even be able to send you in the direction of something unexpected that can result in significant savings. Strategy: Inquire for assistance from the auxiliary club linked with the church or other organization where your wedding will be place.

Buy the wedding dress off the rack and on sale, or borrow and modify

According to The Knot, the typical wedding dress costs $1,600, which is a hefty price to pay for something you’ll most likely only wear once in your life. Is there a much better idea? Inquire as to if anyone in your family or among your close friends still has their old dress in their possession and whether it is feasible to borrow it. It may require some alterations in order to function properly, but spending $200 on tweaks is preferable to spending $1,600 on a dress.

If this isn’t a possibility, seek for a secondhand dress and make comparable modifications to it – this will still be less expensive than purchasing a new dress. Strategy: Obtain or purchase a wedding gown. Savings:$600-$1,400

Choose affordable, simple wedding rings

Approximately $1,610 on average for a wedding ring pair, according to the Brides American Wedding study. This is in addition to, of course, the engagement ring and wedding band. A basic wedding band, on the other hand, can be an excellent choice. Using a basic band is inexpensive, modest, and will not catch on clothing. If you keep it simple and merely shave 25 percent off the cost of the rings, you’ll save a significant amount of money. Strategy: Simple wedding bands are a good choice. Savings:$400

Too long, didn’t read?

If you agreed to every single cost-cutting suggestion in this article, you could save about $24,000 on your wedding, bringing the $28,000 price tag down to less than $4,000 in total. Naturally, not every option will be suitable for your needs, but even a small number of these options can result in significant savings on your wedding day. Tips for Planning a Wedding on a Budget

After you’ve gained a better understanding of what your financial resources can buy you, what steps can you take to further reduce the cost of your wedding? Here are seven tips to help you keep your wedding costs down and stay within your budget!

1. Limit your guest list.

When it comes to fashion, sometimes less is more! Think of it this way: every person is an expenditure. You could be tempted to create a guest list that is as large as the one for the royal wedding, but resist the temptation! It may come out as harsh, but it is real, you guys! By increasing the number of people on your guest list, you’re merely increasing the entire expense of your wedding. If you want to save money on your wedding, you can consider hosting a smaller, more personal gathering.

If so, consider decreasing your guest list by 20%, followed by an additional 20% on top of that. Alternatively, you might invite a larger number of people to the wedding ceremony then have a smaller celebration with your family and closest friends.

2. Host the ceremony or reception at home or outside.

The location accounts for the greatest portion of the wedding budget—nearly half, in fact. (2)Instead of hiring a professional photographer, why not use your own house, a parent’s home, or a public park as a backdrop? Having an outdoor ceremony and reception at a location that has special importance for the couple avoids the need for an expensive, ornate venue. If you do decide to have an outdoor event, make sure you have a solid backup plan in place in case something goes wrong. Rain or even high heat might put a damper on your plans, so make sure you have a backup plan in case something goes wrong.

3. Ask friends and family to exchange skills for presents.

If you have friends and family members who are talented in the areas of creativity or organizing, ask them to volunteer their time at the wedding in place of giving a gift. Would you want to be given a free stand mixer or live music in lieu of a gift? Make use of your existing network. Is your aunt a budding florist in her spare time? Is your acquaintance a photographer with a keen eye for composition? Is your next-door neighbor a restaurant owner who could be willing to offer you some space?

Don’t forget about your own abilities as well.

For example, you might swap your graphic design skills for a free wedding cake, or your accounting skills for a free dress alterations service.

4. Do-it-yourself whenever possible.

When you and your fiancé do things yourself, you may save a lot of money. However, here’s a word of caution: only DIY when you are confident that the end will be worthwhile. Also, leave yourself plenty of time to accomplish any DIY tasks you may be undertaking. Remember, you don’t want to stay up till the wee hours of the morning on the day of your wedding decorating cupcakes or putting together table centerpieces. Beautiful wedding invites are lovely, but do you really want to spend $800 on something that will be thrown away after a few months?

  1. Nothing more than a high-quality home printer and an invitation package from a stationery store or an office supply store will suffice.
  2. You can make and purchase wedding invitations online from sites such as, which are reasonably priced for the quality.
  3. There is no doubt that it will be less elegant than gold leaf or an invitation printed on a souvenir tea towel, but it will be far less expensive.
  4. Come up with a meal with your family and then go to a wholesale market to get the food and materials you need.
  5. You may also use flowers from your own backyard to decorate your home.

Winston and I were married in December, and in lieu of flowers, we included a lot of seasonal elements such as berries and holly into the decor. The décor for my own wedding was one area where I had to make significant savings in order to stay inside my budget.

5. Use a dummy wedding cake.

You should know that wedding cakes are pricey, you guys! Make a mock wedding cake and decorate it to save money. It is possible for a pastry chef—or someone you know who has icing skills worthy of being featured on a reality television baking competition—to adorn a stack of Styrofoam in the same way that a genuine wedding cake is decorated. Serve your visitors portions of a sheet cake that you purchased from the grocery store. They won’t be able to tell the difference! In order to maintain the cake-cutting custom, have a smaller cake prepared specifically for you and your husband.

6. Time your wedding wisely.

In the United States, the average price per person for a plated supper is around $71. (1) Schedule your wedding in the afternoon and plan a reception that is more like an extended cocktail hour with passed hors d’oeuvres to save money on food costs. (2) Avoid the expense of a sit-down meal by scheduling your wedding in the afternoon and planning a reception that is more like an extended cocktail hour with passed hors d’oeuvres. Take into consideration the day of the week as well. If you schedule your wedding on a Friday or Sunday, you may be able to save up to half the cost of your reception location.

In addition, bear in mind the time of year.

Because of this, you should expect to pay more during the fall season when wedding resources are scarce.

7. Scout out vendors.

Invest the necessary effort in researching and comparing various wedding suppliers. If you’re looking for a pastry chef, don’t just choose the first guy you come across on the street. To ensure that you are receiving high-quality service at the lowest possible price, schedule time to visit with many vendors. The value of an excellent reference from someone you know and trust cannot be overstated! Don’t forget to ask your friends and family for recommendations on suppliers they would recommend.

A Beautiful Wedding on a BudgetIsPossible!

Keep in mind that your wedding is about the two of you and your future together. And that will linger far longer than a single day of celebration will allow for. Keep in mind that throughout all of the excitement of wedding preparation, it is important not to lose sight of what is actually important. Spending a lot of money on your wedding day will not demonstrate your love for one another, but it may result in you having an empty bank account after the ceremony. How to have a great wedding on a small budget

When I was a small girl, I never saw myself being married in a huge, conventional ceremony with all of the frills. As soon as my now-husband and I were engaged, we talked about our wedding and reception plans in detail, rather than focusing on what we were “supposed” to do. Without realizing it at the time, we were able to save thousands of dollars on our wedding and avoid going into debt as a result of our unconventional thinking. We were not interested in a typical church wedding, nor were our friends and family.

  1. We had previously planned a trip to Hawaii to attend a friend’s wedding, so when we found out we were expecting a child, we chose to be married on a different island than our friend.
  2. The fact that everyone was responsible for booking and paying for their own travel and hotels was made quite apparent.
  3. There was just one day that we had scheduled with the group, which was our wedding day, which was quite straightforward.
  4. In addition to purchasing leis for the wedding guests from a Costco shop on the island (which was far less expensive than purchasing them from a florist), I also purchased some different tropical flowers, which my mother assembled into a tiny bouquet for me to carry.
  5. A small group of guests stood in a semicircle around us for the brief ceremony, and my parents escorted me down a “aisle” path leading to the shore.
  6. For a total of $499 we received the ceremony, an hour of photography, and the printing rights on a CD of completely edited images, all of which were included in the price.
  7. We hosted a cocktail reception party with around 100 people a week after returning from our wedding/honeymoon in Las Vegas.
  8. A caterer provided the heavier hors d’oeuvres (pulled pork sliders, mashed potatoes, flatbread pizzas, meatballs, hummus, and a variety of other alternatives), and cupcakes were served in lieu of a wedding cake, which was a personal preference.

Despite the fact that it might have gone on for much longer, our reception was precisely what we wanted it to be. By following these suggestions, we were able to spend far less money than we would have if we had held a typical wedding reception:

The big picture

Make a prioritized list of your goals. It was crucial to us to have good food (we particularly requested appetizers because we don’t generally eat at receptions), a picture booth, music, and a well stocked bar for our reception. With our beautiful wedding images from Hawaii already in our possession, we were not concerned about spending a lot of money on a photographer, and we knew that the photo booth would give us with a ton of entertaining photos of our guests. Consider the possibility of eloping (or having a very small wedding).

Schedule your reception on a day other than a Saturday if possible.

This resulted in lower costs and greater convenience when booking the few providers that we employed.

Take time to carefully choose your guests. Pals were excluded from the list if we had never asked them to our home or if they had never invited us to theirs. This was our general rule of thumb for choosing friends. Fortunately, we do not have big extended families, so this portion of the guest list was acceptable, and we invited all relatives who were interested in attending from our immediate families. Children (with the exception of family members, who all happened to be over the age of 8) were barred from participating: In any case, a cocktail party is not a good place for children.

  • I used my ordinary printer to create photo postcards.
  • Because postcard stamps are less expensive than ordinary envelope stamps, we were able to save around 25% on postal expenses by utilizing postcards instead of conventional envelopes.
  • We utilized seal-and-send invitations that had an all-in-one design that you could use to print your invitation on.
  • No envelopes are required; simply fold, seal, and mail!
  • Keep the number of attendants to a minimum.
  • We were able to avoid purchasing attendant presents and hosting a rehearsal dinner as a result of this.
  • Have the rehearsal supper in your house or in a park if you have one.
  • Pick a food that is simple to prepare and can be served to a large group, such as pulled pork or other picnic classics.

As an alternative to purchasing a conventional wedding gown, try purchasing a bridesmaid’s dress in white or ivory. Most gowns are available in those hues, and many more. You might also go for an evening gown that isn’t designed exclusively for a wedding reception. In total, I spent less than $1,000 for my wedding dress, which was a beachy number for the ceremony and a Grecian-style bridesmaid’s gown in ivory for the reception. For additional information, see 5 methods to save money on a wedding dress.

  • Make a choice based on what you’ll wear again.
  • It is not necessary to hire a tuxedo for the groom.
  • Look for fantastic prices and find something he will be able to wear again and again.
  • If you want them to match each other’s outfits, remind them that the dress must be a specific color.

Groomsmen can purchase or rent outfits that are complementary to the groom’s style preference. Alternatively, you may make things simpler on them by asking them to wear a suit that they already possess in black or gray.

Venue and catering

If your wedding and reception are both taking place on the same day, try to keep them in the same venue. You will not be required to arrange transportation for yourself or your wedding party between the two locations you have chosen. Consider venues that aren’t conventional. Weddings and receptions can be held in city-owned buildings, public gardens, art galleries, and restaurants, among other locales. Despite the fact that our reception was held in a private racquet and swim club in a premium suburb, the cost was really reasonable.

  • We were able to save well over $1,000 as a result of this.
  • Before making any selections, take into consideration what your venue or caterer covers as part of their service package pricing.
  • The caterer also took care of the rental, delivery, and pick-up of cocktail tables that we wanted scattered around the space.
  • Instead of a full reception, a cocktail party might be held.
  • In addition, because our visitors were not required to sit down to eat, the evening maintained the communal atmosphere that we were looking for.
  • Based on our customers’ tastes, we decided to have certain spirits (vodka, flavored vodka, bourbon, gin, and rum) accessible.
  • A toast does not necessitate the use of champagne.
  • If you prefer a sparkling beverage, prosecco or cava will be available at the bar for purchase.
  • Select a wedding cake that is not too large.
  • The advantage of serving cupcakes is that you may provide a choice of tastes.

Keep bouquets as basic as possible. Simple bouquets are best, with bridesmaids each being given a few stems of a certain flower to hold. Boutonnieres and boutonnieres can both be the bud of the same flower. Other fresh flower arrangements should be kept to a minimum. Anyone who attends your wedding will not notice if you do not have flowers lining the aisles or in vases throughout the site. Flowers may be purchased in a grocery shop or big-box retailer. Choosing flowers that are in season or from your local area will further reduce your costs.

Vases may be purchased at craft stores using coupons or they can be purchased secondhand.

Make use of your imagination when it comes to decorating.

Choosing decorations that are simple to set up and take down will make your event go more smoothly the day before and day of the event. The internet is brimming with ideas for low-cost centerpieces.

The small details

For those who do not think photography important, try employing a photography student from your local art school. Examine the portfolios of possible photographers to verify that their style is a good match for your requirements. Save money on your wedding photographer by foregoing “getting ready” images and asking friends and family to capture candid moments during the second part of the reception, when it’s simply people dancing and drinking. Make wedding favors, or don’t bother with them. For a low charge, you may set up a cookie or candy table with tiny boxes or bags of goodies for guests.

  • Makeup, nails, and hair are all done by you.
  • I know a lot of people who were dissatisfied with their hair and makeup on their wedding day, despite the fact that they spent a lot of money at the salon.
  • I was thrilled.
  • Create an iPod playlist to be played over dinner, and delegate the responsibility of making any announcements to a buddy.
  • Create an account on Amazon.
  • Apart from offering free delivery (guests can shop online and have the item transported directly to them if necessary), they also frequently have lower costs than other retailers.
  • With careful consideration of what is important to you for your wedding and flexibility with aspects that are less important, you may have the wedding of your dreams while spending less money than you would have otherwise.
