‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ cast reunites for EW’s rom-com issue

Meredith has affiliate relationships with other companies. However, Meredith may receive commissions for products purchased through affiliate links, so this does not have an impact on editorial content. All good reunions should include plenty of tears and laughter, and there were plenty of both recently when Entertainment Weekly reunited the cast of the 1997 blockbusterMy Best Friend’s Weddingin Los Angeles. Star Julia Roberts, 51, and her fictional BFF Dermot Mulroney, 55 (both of whom are close friends in real life), arrived together and were eager to get to work.

Then there was a burst of laughter.

And it only got better when Roberts’ gay wingman George was introduced by his costar Rupert Everett, 59, who had just arrived.

Several people have approached Diaz and simply exclaimed, “My Best Friend’s Wedding!” to which Diaz responds with an adoring “Aww.” “It’s just this wonderful feeling that you get when you’re done with them.” “Thank you so much for your help.” Mulroney is so moved by the film that he breaks down in tears while discussing it.

People come up to me and bring up this movie, which has been playing every day for the past 22 years,” says the director.

Kimmy is a college student from Chicago (Cameron Diaz).

Wedding, which is available for download on Amazon PrimeoriTunes, distinguishes apart from other films in the category because it incorporates elements of both sweetness and sourness, as seen by the casting of America’s Sweetheart, Roberts, as the fairly wicked Julianne in the film.

Hogan, who was interviewed separately from the performers, adds, “Romantic comedy is a particularly challenging genre.” Romantic comedies are doomed because they frequently feel prefabricated or like frozen food that hasn’t fully thawed – they’re just not that fresh.” However, when I see the film, it still has a certain zing to it.

  • In addition, Julia was outstanding in the major part, in my opinion.
  • To discuss about the film, catfights, and, of course, karaoke, Entertainment Weekly brought together theWeddingparty.
  • It was a return to the genre that had made Roberts a celebrity with 1990’s Pretty Woman, and it included important roles for newcomers Diaz, who made her feature film debut in 1994’s The Mask, and Everett, who had previously appeared in a supporting role.
  • JULIA ROBERTS: I just thought that was a really creative and amusing piece of writing.
  • There was a lot of falling down and falling through things, as well as falling all over myself and falling over Dermot, among other things.
  • “Pick me,” I say.
  • DERMOT Aspects of the film that appealed to me were that he was the main character and that Julia Roberts admired him.

He was a sportswriter, and he was deeply in love, in ways that many people continue to disagree with me about to this very day.

No, I’m not serious.

It was, like, a life-changing experience for me.

It’s very amazing.

We went to Chicago about a year and a half ago, and she took me to every single attraction she could find.

It was a tremendous amount of pleasure.

At first, I felt it was a bit of a suicide attempt for my professional life.

Hogan required me to test for the film three or four times before he would consider me for the role.

“I’m at a loss for what I can do.” ROBERTS:It seems like you didn’t want it at all.

What was the point of it all, I wondered.

In addition, Rupert, we have our cinematic culture to consider.

EVERETT:However, we all got along tremendously well right away.

And it was a beautiful experience for me.

mbfw 83283473429443232.jpg Julianne conducts a variety of sabotage tactics, the most embarrassing of which is a karaoke bar triple date between her, Michael, and Kimmy, who is vocally impaired.

Cameron had simply fumbled her way through the song, and the worse she went, the better the situation turned out to be.

DIAZ:I was genuinely afraid about doing that sequence.

I really wanted to flee and hide, but Dermot prevented me from doing so.

The entire time I’m in the scene, I’m just staring at him because he’s looking at me like, “You’re OK.

The moment is remarkable because it goes from being absurd to being profoundly emotional in a matter of seconds.

ROBERTS: I need to rewatch this movie.

I don’t recall ever felt alone when plotting a novel.

Furthermore, Julianne was aware of my reluctance to sing, and she insisted on my singing.

Is everything all right?

Another memorable scene is a scene in which George breaks into Burt Bacharach’s “I Say a Little Prayer” in front of Julianne, Michael, Kimmy, and the rest of the wedding party while eating seafood at a seafood restaurant in front of them.

I’d always wanted to shoot a scene at a restaurant, so this was the perfect opportunity.

originally, when I received the script.

created the scenario from scratch.

And we were all like, “Wait a minute, what?” “Is this really happening?” we wondered.

Julianne and Michael go on a boat cruise across Chicago, where they have one final dance together.

If we were in your shoes, we’d either pause or just keep going as you do.

My eyes are drawn upward, and it’s, like, an acquaintance from college, who didn’t really qualify.

Immediately following the completion of Weddingwrapped, it was subjected to some tough test screenings, which forced the production team back into reshoots.

HOGAN:Once I realized that the studio would pay for the last scene, I said to myself, “There were a number of other sequences that I felt were terrible — we’d better do a better job on the others.” The first restroom scene, in particular, was completely ineffective.

On set, Cameron kept repeating, “I don’t know why I’m forgiving her; I just want to hit her.” I recall him saying this again.

“It wasn’t good for her character to not have,” everyone agreed as the movie was being put together.

DIAZ:If Kimmy hadn’t stood up for herself, the outcome of the narrative might have been quite different.

ROBERTS Neither was the original finale, which was filmed by us.

HOGAN: The focus group didn’t want Julianne to have a happy ending, and that’s what we got.

They simply weren’t prepared for her to wind up in the arms of another man at that point.

The chemistry between Rupert and Julia is incredible.

It’s just stunning.

It’s a really emotional piece.

HOGAN: It was dubbed “the $40 million reshoot” by one of the studio’s top executives.

“No, that’s what you’ve done to increase your box office,” he responded.

Mulroney and Diaz are of the opinion that Michael and Kimmy are still married and living happily ever after.

MRS. EVERETT: I think George and Julianne are a little bit like Will and Grace in their relationship. ROBERTS: We aren’t going to be living together. However, I reside just across the street.

‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ turns 20: How it would be different in 2017

— – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — – This year marks the 20th anniversary of the release of “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” which, like so many other films from the 1990s, hasn’t exactly stood the test of time. Starring “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” starring Julia Roberts as Julianne, a 27-year-old food critic who is striving to win back her ex-boyfriend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney), as he prepares to marry bright-eyed, 20-year-old Kimmy (Cameron Diaz), would most likely look quite different if it were created today.

  1. Here are a few illustrations.
  2. Jules and Michael would most likely be in their late twenties: In the film, the plot focuses around a simple pact that the two main characters made when they were younger: if they were both still unmarried by the age of 28, they would marry one another.
  3. “The one consistent thing in my life is that he’ll always be there,” Jules said of her boyfriend.
  4. Since 1997, however, there has been a slight change in societal standards.
  5. According to a 2013 Pew Research Center survey, the median age for marriage is progressively increasing, with women’ median ages of 26.5 and grooms’ median ages of 28.7.
  6. As a result, it is possible that the marriage agreement was never signed in the first place.
  7. Jules would not have been taken by surprise when she learned that Michael had proposed to her: When Jules finds that Michael has proposed to someone else, she collapses to the ground in the film.

That Michael, her best friend, wouldn’t have contacted her to tell her that he was dating someone else, or that Kimmy wouldn’t have made her relationship public on social media, seems improbable.

Kimmy would have been well aware of what she might anticipate from Jules: According to a 2015 Pew Research Center research, 31 percent of female Internet users use Instagram, while 55 percent of Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 use the social media platform.

The chances that she wouldn’t be on Instagram are little to none.

The black tie affair, which included a five-piece band, somehow appeared to come together without a hitch.

The Knot published a survey of wedding trends last year, and the findings revealed that the cost of weddings is increasing, with women placing a greater emphasis than ever before on personalisation.

There may have been more serious consequences for Jules than simply a few awkward chats with Kimmy and Michael in the aftermath of her actions.

Would Jules have been able to carry out her nefarious scheme in the end?

She is never contacted about work and she never checks her emails or messages – this is because smart phones did not exist at the time. There may be less hours in the day to chip away at the engaged couple’s relationship nowadays because of more distractions.

  6. (perEntertainment Weekly.) “If George hadn’t showed there, it would have been such a depressing conclusion,” the filmmaker said.
  7. “It was those final five minutes that made the whole movie come together.” Roberts is hardly the only actress who has been cast as a second choice for a part that has gone on to become renowned.
  8. Rachel McAdams was cast in the role in its place.

They did, however, demonstrate that a number of critical instances may have gone a very other way.

Director Hogan provided the following explanation: “When I was on site, Cameron kept saying things like, “I don’t know why I’m forgiving her; all I want to do is hit her.” ‘She came close to ruining my life.’ “Cameron previously stated that the sequence provided her character with an opportunity to “have her moment.” The film’s initial finale was likewise changed before it was released in its final form.

Hogan went on to say: “They did not want Julianne to have a happy ending, according to the focus group.

I assumed the answer was George, because the picture was at its best when Rupert was in front of the camera.

I Watched ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ for the First Time Ever, and Michael Is Seriously Problematic

Yes, I understand. Your first thought is undoubtedly “Who is this person who has been waiting more than two decades to watch one of the best romantic comedies of all time?” To be honest, I was only five years old when My Best Friend’s Weddingwas published, and it was only lately that I came upon this ’90s romance when browsing through the romance titles on Amazon Prime. Due to the overwhelming number of excellent reviews from critics, I believed it had to be worth my time to see, so I gave it a chance.

  • The only issue is that there isn’t enough time.
  • Will she be able to stop this wedding in its tracks and achieve what she truly desires?
  • I enjoyed the humor, but I must admit that I spent a significant amount of time staring at the computer because I couldn’t get past Jules’s poisonous behavior (did she really have to compel her best friend to play her fiancé?).
  • In addition to Jules’s problems with Michael, I believe that Michael had some severe problems of his own, which I believe is frequently missed because of Jules’s behavior.

Here are five reasons why Michael’s persona is a thorn in the flesh. RELATED: These 5 Iconic Television Couples Are Actually Having Serious Relationship Issues (Sorry, RossRachel) Photograph by Ronald Siemoneit / Getty Images

1. He’s willing to let Kimmy sacrifice her future to pursue his own career

The fact that Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) wants to support her partner’s professional ambition is great; what is distressing, however, is the fact that Michael does not reciprocate her efforts in the same way. After dropping out of school at the age of 20 (take that in.), Kimmy is more than delighted to accompany her husband on business trips across the world as he works as a sports journalist. However, when she expresses her concerns about having second thoughts, Michael erupts in anger and manipulates her into believing that she is the evil person.

2. His reaction to seeing his BFF half-naked is seriously inappropriate

According to what you may recall, there is one moment in the film where Michael accidently walks in on Julianne as she’s changing in her hotel room, but when he sees her in her underwear, it does not even cause him to flinch. Michael simply stands there and takes in the scenery, joking that he’s “already seen her more nude.” Without so much as an apology, Michael continues to enjoy the vista. Then, just as he leaves, he compliments her on how “very amazing she looks without her clothes on.” In this case, please correct me if I’m wrong, but if a groom-to-be casually walks in on his half-naked BFF and his first inclination is to flirt, it’s a good indication that this guy isn’t yet ready to commit to marriage.

However, in this particular instance, he is actively encouraging another lady while he prepares to tie the knot with someone who is prepared to forego her profession and education in order to be with him.

3. Michael is more honest with Jules than with his own fiancée

As much as I despised Jules’s self-centered conduct and Michael’s improper flirtatious remarks, I’ll confess that this scenario made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The vulnerability that we all share. The way Jules and Michael looked at each other was quite telling. When Michael referred to Jules as the “lady in his life,” Jules’ reaction was priceless. It seemed like I was watching a melancholy Hallmark romance movie on repeat. The reality that this was all taking place immediately before Michael’s wedding, however, could not be shaken.

Clearly, this was his way of providing Jules with an opportunity to express herself about how she felt, and I was confident that she would do so (particularly given the extent she had previously gone to in order to spoil his wedding).

Despite their incredible connection, this is not the greatest environment for anyone to be in when they are ready to tie the knot with the person they consider to be the love of their life.

I get that Jules is his closest buddy and all that, but Jules was not the one who needed to hear this at that moment. In the event that Michael actually cared about and respected his fiancée, he would have had the decency to be completely honest with her about how he was feeling.

4. He sucked Kimberly ‘ s wedding ring off Julianne ‘ s finger

Toss a coin: if you were ready to marry someone and you saw that the engagement ring had been stuck on your best friend’s finger, would you a) look out safe ways to remove tight rings on the internet, b) smear it in butter and pray for the best, or c) seductively suck it off their finger? Michael, it appears, chose the third choice, and, ladies and gentlemen, the sexual tension in that scene was thick enough to cut with a butter knife. It’s worth noting that he doesn’t even bother to inquire as to why Jules attempted to put the ring on in the first place, and while I get that he was feeling down about Kimmy, his attitude was still very wrong.

5. His first dance with his new bride is to a special song that he shares with Julianne

When Michael and Kimmy realized how awkward things were, they agreed to allow Jules, the ultimate sabotage, attend their wedding ceremony. But I was taken aback when Jules offered to “lend” them the same particular song that she and Michael had been singing for years. I mean, seriously? Considering that Jules had professed her feelings for him only hours before the wedding, did Michael not feel uncomfortable in any way about this situation? Did he fail to consider how his memories of Jules could interfere with his ability to build a fresh, meaningful relationship with his wife?

‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’: Original Ending Could Have Changed Julia Roberts’ Julianne’s Fate

A satisfactory conclusion to a film is not always simple to achieve. Take, for example, the Julia Roberts picture, My Best Friend’s Wedding, which is currently in theaters. Even when compared to previous films featuring Roberts, the film’s conclusion is a little surprising. Its original conclusion, on the other hand, would have significantly altered the course of the main character’s life. What was the premise of ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’?

My Best Friend’s Wedding was a romantic comedy film released in 1997. The film took advantage of Roberts’ enormous fame at the time, which was still riding high on the wave created by the hit filmPretty Woman in the early ’90s. Julianne is played by Roberts, while her closest friend Michael (played by Dermot Mulroney) is engaged to another lady, Kimberly, in the movie (Cameron Diaz). Roberts, with the help of her friend George (Rupert Everett), comes to the realization that she is genuinely in love with Michael and wants to call off the couple’s upcoming wedding.

As reported by the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), it earned approximately $300 million worldwide on a budget of $38 million, resulting in a significant financial gain for the studio.

It also demonstrated that Roberts was still a huge draw at the box office, a position that she has continued to play to this day.

Most of the problems stemmed from the fact that test audiences didn’t care for her character and considered her unsympathetic.

“They were very nervous because we were making a Julia Roberts film, and they couldn’t have her end up alone and unhappy,” director P.J.

He assisted her in examining her decisions (many of which were poor) and acted as a sort of spokesperson for the audience throughout the performance.

Because of this, the film could close on a brighter, happier tone while yet maintaining its stern message about death. It’s most likely what helped it become one of the most lasting films of Roberts’ long and successful filmography.

The Jell-O Speech From ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Is the Best Relationship Advice You Can Give

My Best Friend’s Wedding, Julia Roberts’ magnum opus, will be available on Netflix later this month. It is impossible to overstate the significance of this. Netflix’s Julia Roberts canon was left with a huge void after it was added last autumn and then summarily withdrawn from the service in December. There are other films to see, such asRunaway Bride and Mystic Pizza, if you’re interested in that sort of thing, but there’s no substitute for her best work, which also features Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney, Rachel Griffiths, and the delicate essence of Dionne Warwick’s songbook.

  • What I’m referring to is the discussion regarding Jell-O and Crème Brûlée.
  • Allow me to spin you a yarn as soon as possible.
  • Aja, on the other hand, had nearly memorized the entire film.
  • A speech she had learned and had used on a number of occasions, deploying it on dejected and inebriated strangers, had become her trademark.

  • A manic “big-haired food reviewer,” Julianne (Roberts), is talking to Kimmy (Diaz) about her forthcoming wedding as the scenario begins.

Michael is her best friend, after all (Mulroney).

Michael is in the mood for Jell-O.

The moment Kimmy begins to doubt her abilities as Jell-O, Julianne interrupts with the statement, “You’re never going to be Jell-O!” During this time, Aja sat alongside me, her eyes wide as she waited to see what I would say.

I was not aware of it.

She went on to explain that the speech is a miracle treatment for the inebriated folks you meet on the street whose evenings finish in tears, certainly due to a heart condition.

When you give the speech, it works like a magical symbiotic salve: you explain to an intoxicated person (let’s call her Patrice) that the guy who abandoned her at the bar was never good enough for her in the first place.

Garbage from the peasants.

She, on the other hand, is the crème brûlée of the bunch.

It’s a delicious treat.

For the record, the gender configuration here is completely arbitrary.

Everyone seemed to be in good health.

In theory, it’s a hilarious thought, but in practice, no one is ever going to accept the metaphor.

This is Shakesperian-level speech, disguised in the language of scriptwriter Ronald Bass, and it is rather entertaining.

Every time, it happens.

I don’t recall what time it was, but it was late—somewhere around the time when the clocks began to tick backwards again.

“Are you all right?” I inquired as I came by to check up.

Her demeanor gave me a hint as to where things were going.

How she’d been flirting with a certain gentleman.

And suddenly he was gone.

I just went out the entrance of Two Doors Down and didn’t say anything to anyone.

“And what about men like that?

Jell-O is a soft substance.

The entire speech will only be effective if you are able to deliver that final sentence flawlessly.

She did, however, crack a smile.

Exhausting labor might be required in order to spread Julia Roberts’ knowledge.

Occasionally, individuals become completely immersed in the game.

Someone once broke down and sobbed.

But no one has ever guessed that it was taken from Julia Roberts’s My Best Friend’s Wedding, and I believe Julia Roberts would be pleased with that.

It was given to me by Aja, and I believe I have now given it to you.

Allowing someone to know they’re crème brûlée will allow you to take pleasure in the moment.

The film My Best Friend’s Weddingwill be available for streaming on Netflix beginning on February 1.

Julia Roberts is the worst in ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’

Julia Roberts is the definition of a movie star according to Webster’s Dictionary. Julia Roberts is the personification of good naturedness on a human level. She has a grin on her face everywhere she goes. During her heyday in the 1990s and 2000s, she was dubbed “the Audrey Hepburn of our time,” appearing in a succession of romantic comedies and virtually taking over for Meg Ryan as the leading lady. With an outstanding track record of blockbuster blockbusters under her belt, Roberts had established herself as a bankable movie star.

Hogan), she portrays Julianne Potter, a culinary writer who discovers that she is in love with her long-time best friend.

A film like My Best Friend’s Wedding is meant to be the type of film in which the viewer is supposed to cheer for Julianne, believing her to be a strong woman.

Dermot Mulroney’s best buddy, Michael O’Neal (Dermot Mulroney), is as bland as tofu and as uninteresting as a piece of tofu can be.

Peoplemagazine’s cover has gorgeous smiles and stunning hair.

It’s fine that Mulroney is overshadowed and outshone by the blinding, supernova star quality of his leading ladies Roberts and newcomer Cameron Diaz (who plays his fiancée).

Kimmy Wallace, played by Diaz, is a very young lady who is prepared to put her college career on wait for Michael, despite the fact that Michael does not truly deserve such a significant sacrifice or devotion.

Rupert Everett in the role of Julia Roberts’ Fairy Godmother, which was recorded with a GQ filter.

It pains me to say this, but Everett’s portrayal of a homosexual guy in the film is possibly the most reductive and basic picture of a gay man that I have ever seen.

George hardly appears as a separate entity; rather, he serves as Julianne’s fairy godmother, appearing from time to time to encourage her in her madness before ultimately delivering some wise – if terrible – counsel, namely that she must allow Michael to leave her.

Immediately upon the release of My Best Friend’s Wedding, critics were enthralled with Everett’s performance, proclaiming it to be a “star-making turn.” When it comes to individuals who look like Rupert Everett, he’s charming in that effortless, movie star manner.

He simply sort of stands there, arching his brows, and presto – a star is created.

Greg Kinnear was being slammed by some reviewers for his Academy Award nomination for his role as a homosexual man in As Good As It Gets, which was a bizarre display of tokenism and homophobia.

But let’s go back to Julianne Potter, who resembles a Godzilla-like monster.

But then I realized that there are a plethora of examples in cinema and television of appealing performers portraying bad characters: Sarah Jessica Parker’s unattainable Carrie Bradshaw inSex and the City, Alexis Bledel’s annoyance in The Big Bang Theory.

These performers were able to get away with portraying these heinous creatures by seeming polished and beautiful.

Even more importantly, if James Van Der Beek can deceive us into adoring an uninteresting simp like Dawson Leery, we had no chance when it came to the colossal star qualities of Julia Roberts.

A relationship shark in the sense that she never stops moving and is continuously looking for new methods to break up the engagement with her partner.

Marry Julia!” (I didn’t even have to use Julia Roberts’ character’s name since, when she’s being amusing and charming, she doesn’t actually act, so I didn’t have to.

there) And then, like most rom-coms from the mid-1990s, I forgot about the film and didn’t think about it again until very recently.

“, but I was also like “Michael!” “Marry Julia!” I said, but I thought to myself, “Someone!
